The Sword Smithy lies deep in the woods, which is where half-Swedish, half-Japanese swordsmith Yasha Yukawa works. Participants of this unique experience can immerse themselves and watch Yasha work, as well as learn the craftsmanship, history, and the unique mythology behind sword-making. Times and dates of events will be discussed with participants.
Program 1 – Smithy Experience (approx. 120 mins) Price: 34,000 yen
A tour of the Japanese sword smithy, experiencing and observing various swordmaking craftsmanship in the beautiful nature of Hofu, Yamaguchi. Yasha Yukawa will give a detailed explanation of Japanese swordmaking, which is a unique opportunity. Participants will observe the unique tools for this craft, such as the traditional wooden bellows system (fuigo), and the furnace made out of clay. This is followed by a presentation of Tamahagane, which participants will be able to also touch and interact with. Finally, participants will observe tamatsubushi, which is the first step in processing Tamahagane.
Program 2 – Sword Appreciation Ceremony (approx. 120 mins)

Every year as special events, Yasha Yukawa presents various types of his swords, tools, and raw materials of sword making at historical buildings in Hofu City. Moreover, we organize private sword appreciation ceremony at House la Spada where participants can stay over night as guests. In this private session, participants will get the opportunity to touch and hold these sacred swords, and appreciate them in the traditionally correct way. This etiquette of handling swords dates back hundreds of years.
Program 3 – Sword Smith Knife Workshop (approx. 7 hours)
Price: 98,000 yen
In this workshop you will create a traditional sword style utility knife, together with licensed Japanese swordsmith, Yasha Yukawa. You will be immersed in the experience of artisanal sword making techniques, such as the processes of forging, hardening, and polishing.
In the traditional sword smithy, you will also be able to learn about the tools and raw material “Tamahagane” used to make Japanese swords. By making your own knife, you will have a unique opportunity to gain insight into the world of Japanese sword making.
