The Sword Smithy lies deep in the woods, which is where half-Swedish, half-Japanese swordsmith Yasha Yukawa works. Participants of this unique experience can immerse themselves and watch Yasha work, as well as learn the craftsmanship, history, and the unique mythology behind sword-making. Events are held twice a month, and dates will be discussed with participants.
Program 1 – Smithy Experience (approx. 60 mins)
A tour of the Japanese sword smithy, experiencing and observing various swordmaking craftsmanship in the beautiful nature of Hofu, Yamaguchi. Yasha Yukawa will give a detailed explanation of Japanese swordmaking, which is a unique opportunity. Participants will observe the unique tools for this craft, such as the traditional wooden bellows system (fuigo), and the furnace made out of clay. This is followed by a presentation of Tamahagane, which participants will be able to also touch and interact with. Finally, participants will observe tamatsubushi, which is the first step in processing Tamahagane.
Program 2 – Full Smithy Experience (approx. 120 mins)
Along with the Smithy Experience, after the observation of tamatsubushi, Yasha Yukawa will present a sword and show either the process of ‘sunobe’, which is the process of lengthening the sword to the proper proportions, hitting hot iron with an anvil on a fire bed, or ‘hizukuri’, an extremely detailed process of making the Japanese sword. This is when a handheld hammer is used to create the ridges on the side of the blade and finalise the shape of the sword.
Program 3 – Full Smithy Experience and Sword Appreciation Ceremony (approx. 120 mins + 60 mins ceremony)
After the Full Smithy Experience, in the afternoon, participants will go to a historically significant location in Hofu, City where a Sword Appreciation Ceremony will take place. Here, Yasha Yukawa will present various swords in this historical environment, and participants will get the opportunity to touch and hold these sacred swords, and appreciate them in the traditionally correct way. This etiquette of handling swords dates back hundreds of years.
Please allow a full-day for this program, as the Smithy Experience will be held in the morning and the appreciation ceremony will commence in the afternoon.
